Croix des Bouquets, a mystical village surrounded by fields of sugarcane, has a holy reputation in Haiti as home to some very old spiritual practices. In the ancient Fon Kingdoms of Haiti’s African ancestors Ogoun, the blacksmith, was more revered and feared than the King. Ogoun, by mastering fire, transformed earth into steel for spears, plows, and the tools to build a world.
Georges Liautaud was a blacksmith in Croix des Bouquets in the 1940’s and was the Master who began, in the spirit of Ogoun, creating art from scrap metal. As a child, Serge Jolimeau watched the great Liautaud at his forge and grew up to become the master artisan and leader of the Croix des Bouquets community.
