The mask is a spirit face used in all cultures to evoke power and mystery. Carnival is the time when spirits are invited to visit and play with the living. Children chase devils through the streets and great ancestors come back to life. The seaside town of Jakmèl, Haiti is home to a community of master artisans who produce the town’s annual carnival masks in papier-mâché. With recycled paper, vegetable glue and paint they perform pure magic. Their art transforms everyday life and ordinary people into a parade of larger than life, magical personalities.
